The United States was neutral for most of World War One, but sympathy for many Americans was with the English rather than the Germans. Many Americans went overseas, offering their services to the English and its allies. Most of them were pilots, of course, who wanted to spread their wings. (Although more Americans served in the British air service then in the French ones, it's the Lafayette Escadrille that has the most fame, perhaps due to the movie filmed in 1958, starring Tab Hunter, David Jannsen and Clint Eastwood.)
